Saint-Gobain Quartz (SGQ) Saint Gobain Quartz provides many quartz based products ranging from flat glass, to insulation, abrasives, reinforcements, and dielectric insulation and quartz heater tubes.

Two products that have been developed are:

  • Micaver HT
  • Quartzel®

Quartzel® Photocatalytic substrates (Needled Quartz felt with Ti 0²)

Davidon can supply coated Quartzel® for OEM customers who would develop reactors that would use the substrate with UVB or UVC germicidal bulb systems.

Quartzel® photocatalytic substrates have high photocatalytic efficiency and can be used in air purification applications such as:

  • Building air treatment
  • Hotels, hospitals, restaurants, bars, supermarkets, airports.
  • domestic air purifiers, refrigerators, cooking air treatment
  • industry, odor reduction, safe house systems
  • VOC treament, air conditioning

Why are Quartzel® photocatalytic substrates used in photocatlytic applications?

The excellent UV transmisssion of Quartzel® fibers (quartz is used for fiber optics for example), brings the light in the mass of the material, allowing an effieciency in the volume rather than on the surface that is common in other coated solutions.

What is photocatalysis?

In photocatalytic oxidation a semiconductor, upon absorption of a photon, acts as a catalyst in producing reactive radicals, mainly hydroxyl radicals. These radicals, in turn, can oxidize organic compounds and completely mineralise them. In this way, organic molecules are decomposed to form carbon dioxide, water, and mineral acids as final products.

Conventional treatment methods, in contrast, simply transfer the pollutants from one medium to another. The oxidative power of the hydroxyl radical is more than twice that of chlorine, thus its potential for oxidizing pollutants that normally are hard to destroy, like halogenated organics, surfactants, herbicides, and pesticides, to carbon dioxide.

Photocatalytic Oxidation (PCO) Principles:

  • TiO2 Semiconductor + UV light
  • Absorption of photon by Ti02, acting as a catalyst
  • Production of reactive radical mainly Hydroxyl Radical oxidize organic compound which mineralizes them
  • Decomposition is CO2, H2O and mineral acids as final products.
  • Oxidative power of hydroxyl radical : twice that of chlorine
  • Consequence : oxidation of organic molecules normally hard to destroy, such as halogenated organics, surfactants, herbicides, and pesticides
